Queen Elisabeth (Queen consort of Hungary between 1867-1898) was surrounded by love and worship in Hungary during her lifetime, which increased after her death. This admiration towards her and interest have not decreased over the more than a hundred year.
It is obvious that she felt attracted by the Hungarians since she chose Hungarian lady lady’s companions and maids of honour, who accompanied her not only to Vienna but to her trips and travels as well. Ida Ferenczy, the Hungarian noble lady was her confidant and one of her best friends. The Hungarian Countess Mary Festetics was also a beloved friend and a lady in-waiting of her; her diary serves as a major source for biographers. Hungarian woman, another maid of honour, Irma Sztray was next to her at the moment of her death, she also wrote a memoir about Queen Elisabeth.
The memoirs of the two above mentioned countesses (Mary Festetics and Irma Sztray) are detailed and authentic. Many legends have arisen about Elisabeth in her lifetime and immediately after her death, and even until the recent years more and more things have come to light about her. Among them, many are supported by documents, while others are only partially true or are not based on the reality. Her character and person has always been adapted to the fashion of the age, it can be proved by Sissi trilogy directed by Ernst Marischka in the 1950s.

This website does not present the protagonist of the beautiful Romy Schneider's film (Sissy or Sissi by Ernst Marischka), but it makes an attempt to show the really interesting and complex personality of the Queen.
The Hungarian title of the website is The Real Sisi, the English one is The Truth about Sisi. However, it is important to note that Elisabeth did not like that nickname and liked to use it only in her Bavarian family. One may pop the question: Why is this title then? For a long time I did not like to call the Queen "Sisi". Why shall we call her on a nickname that was not loved by her? The reason is simple: Her name tends to be spelt like this: Sissi or Sissy, however, the correct spelling is Sisi - with this I would like to express and make the readers understand that this website is not about the “Sissy or Sissi image” that is generally known.
I am often asked: “Is not her nickname spelt Sissi? Since everywhere it can be seen like this."
Unfortunately, it is true that in many places in our country and other parts of the world her nickname is spelt like that. However, it is incorrect. In addition, in her “homeland” Austria her nick is also spelt "Sisi". Finally, the empress spelt her nickname “Sisi”. And it is out of question that she must have known how to spell her own name...
There is another theory for her nickname: some experts suggest that Elisabeth’s nickname was actually Lisi, and her signature was misinterpreted. It might be spelt “Sisi” or “Lisi”, but definitely not “Sissi”... Which is the correct spelling? I let my Readers decide it:

The painting of Gyula Benczr “Queen Elisabeth (1899)” was made after Sisi’s death. (It is now owned by the Hungarian National Museum) This is one of the most authentic paintings ever made of the Queen according to her contemporaries. That is why I chose this as a logo for my website . You might have realised that the original image is on the opposite side. With this “interpretation” I would like to illustrate that the Queen's another, less well-known personality is also an aim to be revealed.
